Bristol, RI – Two weeks ago, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse began a month-long jobs tour of the state to hear from small business owners and employees about what they need to succeed in this tough economy. Today, Whitehouse continued the tour with a visit to Bristol Boat Company, a Rhode Island owned and operated small business with a 30-year history of constructing and renovating boats.
“Boat manufacturers and marine trades and industries are an important part of our Rhode Island economy, particularly here in the East Bay,” said Whitehouse, who also held a roundtable discussion in Newport last year to hear from leaders in the marine trades industry. “I’m going to keep fighting for legislation in the Senate that helps our manufacturers compete and create jobs, and it was great to hear from Bristol Boat today about what they need to succeed and grow.”
“Boatbuilding ingenuity and fine trade work are part of Rhode Island’s DNA,” said Daniel W. Shea Jr., Founder and Proprietor of Bristol Boat Company. “There isn’t a day in the shop that something really special does not happen or come together just because of where we work and live.”
Whitehouse is continuing to fight for a series of job-creation initiatives in the Senate. His proposals include tax breaks for businesses that hire, ending tax policies that reward companies for sending jobs overseas, and cracking down on currency manipulation by China that puts American manufacturers at an unfair disadvantage.
