Whitehouse Statement on Sessions Contacts with Russia

Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement concerning revelations that Attorney General Jeff Sessions had contacts with a Russian official during the 2016 presidential campaign:

“The Department of Justice has a rule that says ‘no employee shall participate in a criminal investigation or prosecution if he has a personal or political relationship with any person or organization substantially involved in the conduct that is the subject of the investigation or prosecution.’  That is clearly the case here.  I once again call on Attorney General Sessions to recuse himself from any Department inquiries into these matters.

“Moving forward, I will continue to pursue a bipartisan investigation with Senator Graham into Russia’s meddling in our elections and follow the facts wherever they may lead.”
