Whitehouse Slams SCOTUS Decision Depriving American Voters of Facts About Insurrection Leader Running for President

Providence, RI – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision today in Trump v. United States:

“This decision will cause even greater wreckage than Bush v. Gore.  In what should have been an expeditious and unanimous decision, The Court That Dark Money Built handed Donald Trump another win.  Not only does this decision deprive the American people of knowing whether the former president is guilty of attempting to overturn the last election before they head to the polls in November, it also makes it much harder to hold a former president accountable for illegal acts committed while in office.  The far-right radicals on the Court have essentially made the President a monarch above the law, the Founding Fathers’ greatest fear.

“Justice Sotomayor’s alarmed dissent was signed ‘with fear for our democracy.’  This is a blaring warning to voters of the antidemocratic forces pulling the strings both at the Supreme Court and in the Republican Party.”
