Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a former U.S. Attorney and Attorney General for Rhode Island and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, praised the Senate’s passage today of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 (S. 181):
“This bill guarantees for all women what the Supreme Court denied Lilly Ledbetter: justice in the face of discrimination. I applaud Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ted Kennedy for their efforts to ensure that when a woman is paid less than a man for doing the same work, she will have the right to obtain relief in the courts. It’s fitting that one of the first bills Congress will send President Barack Obama will strengthen our nation’s commitment to equal opportunity for all its people.”
