Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the following statement today regarding objections by Senate Republicans to extending unemployment insurance benefits and COBRA health insurance subsidies for Americans still struggling in the wake of the recession:
“I’ve heard countless stories from people throughout the state who have been out of work far too long through no fault of their own, and for them extended unemployment benefits and COBRA health insurance subsidies have been lifelines, sometimes the only thing that allows them to pay the bills and support their families. By denying an extension of these emergency programs to the tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders unable to find work during the prolonged economic downturn, Senate Republicans are engaging in partisan gamesmanship that hurts the American people.”
