Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and an author of bipartisan legislation included in the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act, released the following statement regarding the announcement by Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA) that the White House will tackle comprehensive criminal justice reform “soon after” the midterm elections and that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) endorses the timeline:
“It is encouraging to hear both the White House and Leader McConnell commit to action on this important issue later this fall. Wide-ranging reform, from updating harmful sentencing practices to helping those leaving prison to transition back to their communities, offers tremendous promise for everyone touched by our criminal justice system. A strong, bipartisan coalition has been poised to act.”
