Whitehouse Condemns Passage of Republican Budget

‘This sham budget tees up massive tax cuts for big corporations and the ultra-rich, like President Trump and his cabinet’

Washington, DC – Today, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Budget Committee, released the following statement on the fiscal year 2018 budget that cleared the Senate this morning by a vote of 51-49:

“This sham budget tees up massive tax cuts for big corporations and the ultra-rich, like President Trump and his cabinet.  For eight years under President Obama, Republicans carried on about the national debt, but now they’re using a partisan shortcut to run up enormous debt for our children and grandchildren to pay off.  At the same time, they propose unprecedented cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.  The Senate can, and must, do better.  There is a bipartisan way.  Republicans need to stop doing the bidding of their billionaire donors and start working with Democrats on real solutions for the middle class.”

Whitehouse has repeatedly called for revisions to the Senate budget process, including ending abuse of the reconciliation process, which Republicans plan to use to fast-track trillions of dollars in tax giveaways for corporations and the wealthy.
