John Kerry to Headline Whitehouse’s Energy, Environmental and Oceans Leaders Day in RI

Eighth annual event to connect Rhode Islanders with national environmental experts

Providence, RI – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse today announced that former Secretary of State John Kerry will headline Whitehouse’s eighth annual Energy, Environmental and Oceans Leaders Day, which will be held in Providence next month.

“I am thrilled that Secretary Kerry has agreed to come to Rhode Island to share with us his unique perspective on environmental and oceans policy, which has been informed by seeing the effects of climate change in every corner of the world,” said Whitehouse.  “There is no one who can speak more knowledgably than Secretary Kerry about why we need to take action on climate change in order to protect our national security and retain America’s place as a leader on the world stage.”

Whitehouse’s Energy, Environmental and Oceans Leaders Day gives hundreds of local leaders from state and local government, industry, the public interest sector, and academia an opportunity to hear directly from experts about the latest environmental initiatives.  This year’s event will take place Friday, October 20, at the Rhode Island Convention Center.  Additional keynote speakers and panelists will be announced in the coming weeks.

“I’m honored that Senator Whitehouse invited me to join him for this year’s Energy, Environment and Oceans Leaders Day,” said former Secretary of State John Kerry.  “He was one of my closest colleagues in the Senate and no one is more passionate about these issues, which are personal for Sheldon and Sandra as environmentalists.  As a coastal state with an economy that depends on protecting the environment, Rhode Island couldn’t have a better advocate for its interests.  Sheldon feels these issues to his core and he puts in the sweat equity to lead in a bipartisan way on the environment in the tradition of the great John Chafee, at a time when we need that the most.”

Due to space limitations, attendance at Energy, Environmental and Oceans Leaders Day is by invitation only.  The event will be open to press.  Details about how to secure media credentials will be provided as the event nears.
