Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse released the following statement after attending today’s ceremony at the White House at which President Obama signed landmark health care reform legislation into law:
“After more than a year of vigorous debate, and after hearing from thousands of Rhode Islanders through my online storyboard, at community dinners, and at meetings throughout the state about how the health care status quo was failing them, it was an honor to join President Obama at the White House today as he signed into law landmark health care reform legislation.
“For all those Rhode Islanders who shared their stories with me in the past year, for all Rhode Islanders who are struggling with rising insurance premiums and unfair practices, today is a victory for you. For parents whose children will be able to stay on their health plan until the age of 26, or whose children were denied coverage based on pre-existing conditions, today is a victory for you. For small businesses who will get help providing insurance for their employees, today is a victory for you. And for seniors who dread the Part D ‘doughnut hole,’ I worked very hard to see that today is a victory for you.
“We still have some work to do in the Senate before this effort is complete, but today we stood with the President to declare that, from this day forward, health care in this country is not just a privilege to the few.”
