Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) today commended President Obama’s nomination of Dr. Donald M. Berwick to be the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, a division of the Department of Health and Human Services.
“I’m delighted that the president has nominated Dr. Don Berwick to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. This is a strong sign of President Obama’s commitment to reform of our outmoded health care delivery system. I look forward to working with Dr. Berwick as he makes CMS a force for value, quality and savings in health care.”
Dr. Donald M. Berwick, is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), a not-for-profit organization leading the improvement of health care throughout the world, a Clinical Professor at the Harvard Medical School, and a pediatrician at the Boston’s Children’s Hospital. Dr. Berwick has published over 130 scientific articles in numerous professional journals on subjects relating to health care policy, decision analysis, technology assessment, and health care quality management.
Now that Dr. Berwick has been nominated by the President, he must be approved by the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pension (HELP) Committee and then confirmed by the full Senate.
