Washington, DC – Today, following a meeting at the White House with President Obama and the America’s Cup winning BMW Oracle team, which U.S. Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse helped facilitate, the Senators released the following statement:
“Rhode Island has a rich history with the America’s Cup. It was a special honor today to join President Obama in congratulating Larry Ellison and his team on their victory, and help remind them of that history. We are pleased the oldest active trophy in international sports will be back in Newport this week.”
The America’s Cup trophy will be on public display on Thursday, July 1 at 9:30 a.m. at Bannister’s Wharf in Newport before being moved to Fort Adams State Park, where it will be on display beginning at 2 p.m.
Ellison and his BMW Oracle team won the 33rd America’s Cup regatta in February 2010 in Valencia, Spain.
For over fifty years, between 1930 and 1983, Newport hosted the America’s Cup competition.
