Washington, DC – Rhode Island’s congressional delegation today announced that two local organizations have been awarded federal grants to help combat violence against women. Day One in Providence will receive $117,986, and the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Warwick will receive $98,461. Both grants are part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Grants to State Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program.
“Violence targeting women harms families and our communities, and cannot be tolerated,” said Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and former Attorney General. “These local organizations are on the front lines in the fight against domestic violence, and the federal funds announced today will support their important work.”
“Breaking the cycle of abuse is the key to ending domestic violence,” said Congressman Patrick Kennedy. “This funding will help these local organizations produce social and systemic change on this issue through their work raising awareness and educating the public.”
“Coordinating efforts across the community to combat violence against women is critical to saving lives,” said Congressman Jim Langevin. “These two agencies have a proven track record of helping families in need and raising awareness. I look forward to continuing to support their ongoing efforts.”
The Grants to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalitions Program was authorized by the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 2000, and is administered by the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW). This grant program supports state coalition efforts to coordinate victim services within their state as well as collaborate with other federal, state, and local entities to respond to violence against women.
