Providence, RI – During a keynote address at the 2011 Netroots Nation Conference in Minneapolis, MN, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) announced that Providence will host the event in 2012. Primarily a gathering of progressive political activists, this conference attracts thousands of participants, notable speakers, and media from around the world. The Providence Warwick Convention and Visitors Bureau (PWCVB) estimates that this convention will bring at least a $1.5 million economic impact to Rhode Island.
“It is an honor to welcome Netroots Nation 2012 to Rhode Island. This event will showcase our Ocean State and provide a much-needed boost to our economy. A conference of this size will book hotels, fill restaurants, and bring cash to our local shops,” said Whitehouse. “Attendees can look forward to so much from our state. From our gourmet dining to our scenic beaches to our thriving arts scene, NN12 guests can expect a memorable and enjoyable visit.”
Whitehouse also credited Rep. David Cicilline with supporting this effort and his work to promote tourism in Providence that helped attract Netroots Nation 2012.

This year’s conference brought 2,200 people to Minneapolis. The PWCVB expects between 2,500 and 3,000 participants in Providence next year, making it a large conference, but one Providence can comfortably host.
