Whitehouse: It’s Time to Begin our Exit from Afghanistan

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the following statement today after President Obama announced that 10,000 U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan this year, with 23,000 more to be withdrawn in 2012:

“For nearly ten years, our troops and their families have made enormous sacrifices for our mission in Afghanistan.  It’s now time for the United States to begin the process of removing our troops and turning security responsibilities over to the Afghan people.

“I applaud President Obama for standing by his pledge to begin drawing down our troop level this year, and will continue making the case for bringing as many of our troops as possible home as soon as possible.  After a decade of sacrifices by our military families and billions of dollars invested to keep our nation safe from terrorists, it is time to start bringing our troops home.”
