Providence, RI – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse today announced the nomination of four Rhode Islanders for consideration to the United States Service Academies.
Whitehouse has nominated Andrea Coutoulakis of East Greenwich and Rachel McAteer of Cranston to the U.S. Naval Academy, John Tougas, Jr., of Pawtucket to the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Ethan Lundgren of Barrington to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
“As a member of Congress, I have the privilege of nominating some of Rhode Island’s finest young men and women for consideration to the United States Service Academies, which are among the most selective institutions of higher learning in the world,” said Whitehouse. “I applaud Andrea, Rachel, John, and Ethan for their commitment to serving our country, and I know they will represent our state well at these academies.”
Members of Congress are allowed to nominate a limited number of candidates to West Point, the Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. In addition to other eligibility criteria, Senator Whitehouse seeks to nominate applicants who have demonstrated leadership qualities, strong academic performance, and proven athletic ability. The United States service academies offer young people a unique opportunity to obtain a first-class education and subsequently serve our country upon graduation as commissioned officers in the United States Military.
