Washington, DC – Today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 to strike down aggregate political contribution limits in the case of McCutcheon v. FEC. U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Judiciary Committee and a leader on campaign finance issues, released the statement below regarding the decision:
“By reversing longstanding precedent and striking down limits on the overall amount any one person can contribute to political campaigns, the five activist Republican appointees on the Supreme Court today dealt another blow to our nation’s campaign finance laws, and once again increased the likelihood of corruption. With these limits now gone, wealthy donors will be able to give millions of dollars directly to candidates and political parties. Money is getting more and more of a voice in Washington, while the voices of hardworking American voters matter less and less in our elections. This is a step in the wrong direction for democracy.”
