Sen. Whitehouse Reaction to State of the Union Address

Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) released the statement below reacting to President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“The proposals outlined by the President tonight would be a big help to families in the Ocean State.  I’m fighting to make sure our improving economy benefits hard-working Rhode Islanders, not just billionaires and big corporations.  From asking wealthy investors to pay a fair share in taxes, to investing in the middle class by making college more affordable, creating jobs through infrastructure projects, and ensuring that workers get to collect the overtime they’ve earned, the President has demonstrated that he is committed to that fight.

“I was also glad to hear the President renew his commitment to fight for progress on three important issues: cybersecurity, climate change, and health care quality.  As the recent Sony hack demonstrated, many of our businesses and citizens are far too vulnerable to cyber attacks.  We know in Rhode Island how climate change can harm our coastal communities.  And we have an immense opportunity to improve health outcomes and lower costs, but only if we commit ourselves to achieving those outcomes.  I look forward to working with the President on these important issues in the months ahead.”
