Whitehouse Statement on Trump Request That Coats and Rogers Push Back on Russia Investigation

Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on news from the Washington Post that President Donald Trump asked Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and National Security Agency Director Admiral Michael Rogers to push back on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election:

“This is yet another data point in a more and more intricate pattern of attempts to disrupt an ongoing federal investigation—an investigation into a foreign adversary’s interference in our democracy.  And the President himself is engaging in this obstruction.

“The report out today suggests that an associate of Admiral Rogers documented his interaction with the President, just as Director Comey did.  Congress needs to see his and any other accounts of episodes like this.  I am certain that Special Counsel Mueller will take notice, as will those of us on the Senate and House panels investigating Russian meddling.  We will get to the bottom of this.  The American people deserve the truth.”
