Washington, DC – Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, released the following statement on the Congressional Budget Office’s score of Senate Republicans’ draft legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, which was released today:
“This report paints a dark picture of our health care system if Republicans jam their bill through: 22 million Americans will go without the coverage they rely on through the Affordable Care Act, just to dole out staggering tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. And that’s on top of the long list of ‘mean’ things we already knew were in this bill, like cutting hundreds of billions of dollars to cover seniors and children, blasting enormous holes in state budgets, and stripping away coverage for the basic care Americans expect.
“Rhode Islanders are right to wonder why Republicans are hell-bent on voting on this measure. Beyond scoring political points for the President, I have no idea. I hope this serves as a wake-up call for President Trump and Republicans on Capitol Hill—abandon this heartless, wretched legislation once and for all and start listening to the American people.”
