Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Courts Subcommittee, today released episode six of his podcast, Making the Case. In the new episode, Whitehouse is joined by former Attorney General Eric Holder and cohost Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA) to break down how the Roberts Court rolled back voting rights and to discuss ways to restore the Court’s integrity.
“When the Supreme Court found that things have changed in the south, and those [voting] protections were no longer necessary, they were wrong,” Whitehouse says during a segment on the Roberts Court’s decision in Shelby County v. Holder.

Whitehouse has long been the Senate’s leading voice for improving transparency and accountability at the Supreme Court, delivering a series of speeches on the Senate floor about the special interest scheme to remake the judicial branch. Whitehouse’s most recent speech yesterday evening outlined the ethics complaint he submitted earlier this month detailing ethical lapses by Justice Samuel Alito, which support billionaires’ lawyers’ blockade of congressional investigations into other ethical lapses by Alito, and underscored the lack of formal process at the Court for receiving or investigating such complaints.
Whitehouse is working to pass the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act, which was passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee in June. The bill would require Supreme Court justices to adopt a code of conduct, create a mechanism to investigate alleged violations of the code of conduct and other laws, improve disclosure and transparency when a justice has a connection to a party or amicus before the Court, and require justices to explain their recusal decisions to the public. The Senator has also led legislation to create term limits at the Court.
