Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) today issued the following statement regarding the Biden administration’s announcement of the United States’ 2035 nationally determined contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, which would reduce emissions by 61 to 66 percent compared to a 2035 baseline:
“I applaud the Biden administration’s ambition in setting a goal to put the planet on the pathway to climate safety. But even after the laudable efforts of our Inflation Reduction Act and landmark infrastructure law, the United States is not at all on track to meet even our previous less ambitious goal. The solution is to charge the biggest polluters for the damage they’re doing to the health of our planet and our economy. Setting big goals and not achieving them is not the way to go.”
Whitehouse, Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, will serve as Ranking Member on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee in the 119th Congress.
