Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, today issued the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked the passage of the bipartisan Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act:
“While far from perfect, I voted for this package to help middle and low-income Rhode Island families keep up with rising child care and housing costs. About 35,000 Rhode Island kids would stand to gain from the restoration of the pro-family and pro-economy Child Tax Credit, and I fought hard to expand the affordable housing tax credits in this package to help spur construction and lower housing costs for Rhode Islanders.
“While this was an opportunity to help kids and families get ahead, Republicans made sure the package favored corporations to a far greater extent. And Republicans still voted to tank it because they think it still helps families too much. As Congress gears up for another tax debate next year, I look forward to taking real steps to unrig our corrupted tax code and deliver a lot more support for the families and workers who need it.”
